House Minority leader Ken Fredette, a Republican, announced he is running for governor in 2018.
PORTLAND (AP) — Ken Fredette, a Republican and longtime ally of Maine Gov. Paul LePage, is joining the state governor’s race.
The Portland Press Herald reports the 53-year-old announced his run Wednesday morning at his law offices.
Fredette is barred from seeking re-election as the House minority leader due to term limits.
He says he plans to run on his military experience as an officer in the state Air National Guard and his 30 years of working for Republican candidates.
Fredette is the third Republican to enter the race. He will run against Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason and former Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew.
There are 13 candidates in the race.
