Country music star Troy Gentry died in a helicopter crash in New Jersey Friday, a week before he was scheduled to appear at the Oxford County Fair.
The band’s Twitter page and multiple media sources were reporting that Gentry, one half the duo Montgomery Gentry, died shortly after the 1 p.m. crash.
The pilot was also killed, according to reports.
Gentry, 50, had been on his way to a show in the southern part of New Jersey.
Gentry was scheduled to appear at Family Fun Field on the Oxford Fairgrounds next Saturday.
Gentry and his musical partner Eddie Montgomery formed the group in the late 1990s. The pair have been nominated for awards by the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music after hits such as “My Town.”
Officials from the Oxford Fair said in a Facebook post that they were monitoring the news.
“We have seen and heard the reports regarding Troy Gentry,” according to the post. “We are keeping all in our thoughts and prayers. We will keep this page updated as we have more information.”
As the news spread, fans were also weighing in on the Oxford Fair Facebook page.
“So sad to hear this news,” wrote Angel Lynn Buck, of Livermore Falls. “Such a great loss to country music nation.”
