LEWISTON – A motorized wheelchair reported stolen from a one-legged man on Blake Street earlier in the week was recovered by police Friday.
Police said the wheelchair turned up Friday afternoon when somebody tried to sell it. No charges had been filed, although police were still investigating later Friday.
George Simmons, who lives at 100 Blake St., said he had been hospitalized overnight Wednesday and left his wheelchair plugged in outside his home. When he returned from the hospital, his wheelchair was gone, he said.
There were conflicting reports Friday about how much the wheelchair was worth. Early estimates were that it was $5,000. That amount later grew to $12,000.
Also stolen was a battery pack and a charger, police said.
On Friday, police were expecting to return the wheelchair to Simmons, who had his right leg amputed a week ago.
