WEST PARIS — The First Universalist Church of West Paris will host a Pete Seeger songfest Oct. 1 by composer/guitarist Jim Scott, who knew Seeger well and collaborated on many projects with the folk legend.
The concert is from 2 to 4 p.m. at 208 Main St.
Scott will lead the audience singing many of Seeger’s well-loved songs such as “If I Had a Hammer,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.”
The audience will be encouraged to raise their voices for the causes Seeger championed and remember the great contributions to American heritage he made in his 94 years of life.
A prolific composer in his own right, Scott is known to many as guitarist with the Paul Winter Consort and co-composer of the celebrated “Missa Gaia/Earth Mass.”
Scott has become a student of the movement for peace and justice in song, compiling and arranging the “Earth and Spirit Songbook,” an anthology of more than 100 songs of Earth and peace by many contemporary composers, including Seeger. His “Gather the Spirit” and other songs are in Unitarian Universalist hymn books.
There is a suggested donation of between $10 and $20. All are welcome.
