NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen will hear an update from the town attorney Thursday on whether the town can draft a moratorium on medical marijuana growing facilities.
The meeting is set at 7 p.m. at the Town Office.
The board has been looking into the legality of instituting a ban since Lewiston resident Rob Laverdiere came before the Planning Board in August and submitted a proposal to turn the former brick production facility of the Advertiser Democrat newspaper at 1 Pikes Hill Road into a medical marijuana growing facility.
He said he would be the primary caregiver and have up to five patients with a maximum of six plants per patient.
However, some of the five selectmen expressed concern that the operation would be in Norway’s historic district and that it is one of three such facilities being considered in Norway in the past five months.
At the Planning Board’s Sept. 14 meeting, members tabled a vote on approving Laverdiere’s site plan review application until they could get more information from the town attorney on the legality of a moratorium.
Other items on the agenda include:
• Public hearing on General Assistance Ordinance appendices;
• Discussion with Scott Vlaun, executive director of the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy, on adding solar power to the Longley Square kiosk; and
• Town manager’s report.
