FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — It is with regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Bartlett on September 22nd, 2017 in Fredericksburg, VA, while surrounded by loved ones.
Born September 14th, 1931, she grew up in Portland and became active in the southern Maine equestrian scene. While attending Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, ME and riding at the Bartlett School of Equitation in Naples, she met her husband, Dr. William S. Bartlett DVM. Their mutual love of horses and professional affiliations took them to many places. These included Pre-Revolutionary Cuba, Florida, Detroit and New England.
They ultimately called New Gloucester home and raised four children and a menagerie of animals on their farm on Bald Hill Road. She was devoted to her family, an avid gardener, served on the school board of SAD 15, Gray-New Gloucester and was involved in other local civic endeavors. In later years she and her husband retired to their winter home in Odessa, FL, where she lived until recently. Close to the racetrack where he had worked for many years, cats, dogs, and wild turkeys were always on hand in the gardens she maintained there.
She is survived by her four children; William Bartlett Jr. of New Gloucester, Marguerite Bartlett of Fredericksburg, VA, Anna Bartlett of St. Augustine, FL and James Bartlett of Virginia, as well as grandchildren, Elizabeth, Isaac, Samuel, William and Milliken.
