BRUNSWICK — A 76-year-old Auburn woman died Thursday night when her car slammed into a bridge abutment on Interstate 295 in Brunswick, police said.
A Maine State Police spokesman said Therese Cyr of Auburn was driving in the wrong lane, likely heading south in the northbound lane from Topsham, when her car veered into the median and struck the Pleasant Street overpass bridge abutment.
State, Brunswick and Freeport police shut down the northbound lanes at the Brunswick exit near the crash site.
A LifeFlight helicopter landed in the roadway, police said, but the woman died of her injuries at the scene and the helicopter did not transport her.
The woman was not identified because police were notifying her family Thursday night.
