FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue’s 9-0 field hockey victory over Lewiston featured two pairs of sisters each scoring a goal and Cougars goalie Erika McArthur taking a penalty stroke — all on Senior Day at overcast Caldwell Field on Wednesday afternoon.
But any victory is a good victory for Mt. Blue coach Jody Harmon, who believes the win ended a winning 11-3 season on a positive note and gives her Cougars confidence going into the playoffs
“You got to keep playing with intensity, keep working on everything. You got to get ready for postseason play,” Harmon said. “We did that. We kept the intensity up. We did a lot of passing sequences, attacking the goal.
“A great day for the seniors. Everybody got to participate. It was a great season and they were all excited to play.”
Junior Adelle Foss began Mt. Blue’s endless assault on the Lewiston net when she scored unassisted midway through the first half.
The Cougars went on to score four more goals coming from Ellie Pelletier, Molly Harmon, Hannah Minns and Samantha Ellis. Along the way, Ellis and sophomore Caitlin Underwood were credited with assists.
Mt. Blue piled up four more goals as Lewiston struggled to contain the scrambling Cougars in the second half.
This time senior Rebecca Harmon began the scoring onslaught when she scored back-to-back goals, with assists going to Ellis and Grace Foss.
Then Adelle Foss scored her second goal on a Rebecca Harmon assist.
In the last couple of minutes, the Cougars hustled to help senior defender Grace Foss score a goal. She did with 30.7 seconds left in the game.
Mt. Blue’s defense was tight and the Blue Devils (2-12) had an impossible time getting near the Cougar net. Mt. Blue outshot Lewiston 40-0 and led in corners, 25-1. McArthur could have brought a book to read in net. She never had to make a save.
“They (Cougars) were incredible, honestly. A really classy team,” Lewiston coach Chelsea Fournier said. “Love Jody. Respect her. She is really an incredible coach. She has done great things with the program.
“They have a classy facility here. For a grass field, it is really good.”
“We knew we were going up against a big challenge. We were trying to work on keeping our heads down, trying to keep our sticks down, and working more together as a team. We have to count it as a building year, all and all, I am so proud of my team. We really did show up today and I happy that they played Lewiston field hockey.”
