LIVERMORE — To raise awareness about hunger and raise funds for their Hunger Prevention services, Rural Community Action Ministry is hosting its third annual Empty Bowls Supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Livermore Community Center, 31 Church St.

Each year, in November, Empty Bowls events are held across the country. Each has a different approach, but the goal is the same – to increase the public’s knowledge about hunger in their local communities. In Maine, 24 percent of children and 23 percent of senior citizens are food insecure. 

All participants will select from an assortment of pottery bowls and a delicious assortment of soups, salads, breads and desserts. There will also be a silent auction of pottery creations.

Volunteer cooks to learn how to safely cook for crowds

PARIS — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer “Cooking for Crowds – Food Safety Training for Volunteer Cooks” from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov. 7, at UMaine Extension in Oxford County, 9 Olson Road.

The workshop will offer up-to-date information on how to handle, transport, store and prepare foods safely for large group functions, including soup kitchens, church suppers, food pantries and community fundraisers.

Participants will receive “Cooking for Crowds,” a manual specifically designed for volunteer cooks, as well as a certificate of attendance, posters and an instant-read thermometer.

Cost is $15 a person for the class, which meets the Good Shepherd Food Bank safety training requirements. Register online.
