Questions:

1. Why do you think you’re the best candidate for this seat, and why are you running?

I am fully invested in my son’s education here in Lewiston, and I know that it takes patience and perseverance to create necessary changes in our schools. I have concerns about our special education programs, classroom overcrowding, excessive top-heavy mandates, and a lack of consistent programming for all of Lewiston’s students. I plan to carry over the skills I have developed while advocating for my son to advocate for all of the students and teachers in our community.

 2. What do you like, and what don’t you like, about the school budget passed in the spring? ($41.75 million in Auburn, up by $1 million; $74.3 million in Lewiston, up by $5.5 million)

I am not overly familiar with this past year’s budget process, but as a fiscally responsible small business owner and Lewiston taxpayer, I am prepared to examine all aspects of the upcoming budget to ensure that existing funds are being allocated most appropriately, and any potential increases are absolutely necessary for the betterment of our schools.

 3. When it comes to property taxes, what kind of budget would you support this spring?

I would support a budget that meets the state-mandated minimum required contribution from Lewiston taxpayers, while best meeting the needs of our community’s students and schools.

 4. What, to you, is the biggest issue facing Lewiston or Auburn schools, and how would you like to see it addressed?

Special education is an area that is close to my heart. I see a need for more specialized training for our teachers, smaller class sizes which will allow teachers work with children who need more one-on-one attention, rather than trying to handle an overcrowded classroom while also addressing individualized needs and behavioral issues. Our teachers are overworked and made to teach in environments that are not ideal for them, or for our students.  These issues cannot continue to be brushed aside.

 5. Do you support the merger of Lewiston and Auburn?

No. At this time I am against the merger as I feel the funds that have already been invested in this proposal, and the funds needed moving forward with a merger could be better spent on more pressing needs within our community.
