It is clear that property taxes would be reduced if Lewiston and Auburn merged.
According to a Sun Journal article (Oct. 2) detailing the ramifications of merging the two cities, an estimate given by the consulting experts was that Auburn taxes would go down from $22.99 to $21.94 per thousand of evaluation, and Lewiston taxes would go down from $28.02 to $23.26.
The state of Maine treasurer wrote an article stating it would be economically better for the residents of both cities to merge.
As a taxpayer who wants to invest in the infrastructure of this community and does not want to see taxes go up for folks on a fixed income, it is clear to me that merging the cities is the best way forward.
I hope other residents will join me in voting “yes” to the merger of Auburn and Lewiston, because it is in residents’ best economic interest.
