AUBURN — Jerome J. Roth, 90, of Clover Manor, formerly from Papoose Island, Raymond, and Vero Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Hospice House in Auburn.
Born in Sheboygan, Wis., on June 4, 1927, he was the son of Raymond Roth and Esther Sprenger Roth. He was educated in Sheboygan Schools and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and upon his return home, attended the University of Wisconsin at Sheboygan and then at Madison. He played basketball and was a cheerleader for his beloved Badgers.
Upon graduation from college, Jerry started with the Hartford Fire Insurance Company in Chicago, Ill., on a career that would send him all across Illinois, then to Hartford, Conn., where he retired as an assistant vice president after 37 years of service.
Jerry was married to Bette Nelson Roth for 52 years and the two of them maintained an active, retired lifestyle until the complications of advanced age set in. Jerry and Bette traveled all over the country, visiting friends and relatives and made regular trips to Sheboygan for Jerry’s high school reunions. They stayed in close contact with good friends, like the Kluges and Stillwells, friends that Jerry grew up with since childhood. Summer adventures together with these friends were always enjoyable. Jerry and Bette spent the summers in Raymond on Papoose Island, where Jerry would spend the evenings fishing on the dock or cruising Sebago Lake. They also enjoyed seeing the world on cruise ships and were regular visitors to Las Vegas. They wintered in Vero Beach, Fla., where Jerry kept busy golfing and working as a tax preparation volunteer for the AARP.
Survivors include his son, Tom, of Auburn, and his fiancée, Nicole Dunbar; and granddaughters, Emily Roth and Olivia Roth, of Auburn. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Bette, in 2014; and his brother, Dr. Richard Roth of Madison, Wis.
Tom wants to thank the compassionate caregivers that Jerry had in his final years at Montello Heights, Clover Manor and Androscoggin Hospice and Hospice House.
