I oppose the merger/consolidation of Auburn and Lewiston. It would almost double the number of constituents each councilor would have and lessen councilor representation on Auburn’s side.
Bigger government is more difficult for citizens to approach and can be intimidating. Larger is not better, and it is certainly more difficult for citizens to be heard.
In Auburn, there are five wards with councilors for each, plus two at-large councilors that serve the entire community (in case a person cannot reach their ward councilor). Folks can almost certainly reach a city councilor and probably the mayor, as well, the way it is now.
If the city is almost doubled in population, the public will certainly be pushed more to the side.
