Autumn, Deer Pond
By Jay Franzel
Still as knots on a fallen log,
Turtles soaking the last September rays.
Maples reflected in the shallow water:
When did they turn red?
Already stars glow in late afternoon:
November gnawing the ragged light.
Six decades pass like a dream.
Woodpecker knocking on a blasted ash.
Everything feels the wind.
