RUMFORD — In recognition of Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, the Rumford Historical Society is launching a search for the personal memoirs of veterans from all wars.

The society is interested in compiling a collection of veterans’ and their families’ memories of those years when the country was embroiled in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Spanish-American War, Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War. Many served in the interim periods, and their stories are welcome as well.

Articles that would be accepted include copies of photographs, letters, diaries and maps. Individuals may also prepare written impressions of their experiences in wartime, if desired. The copies can be left at the American Legion or the VFW locations at any convenient time, or at the Archives Office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays.

All copied items should be identified on the back with the donor’s name, address and phone number. Having that information will allow staff to contact the donor in the future should it be necessary to electronically scan the original document. All documents will be stored at the Archives Office in the Rumford Municipal Building and be available for future research, as well as preserving an important segment of Rumford’s history.

If people have original documents that they no longer wish to retain, they can be permanently donated to the Rumford Historical Society at the Archives Office. Each donor will be asked to sign an accession form, giving all rights of ownership to the society.
