LISBON — The School Committee approved the $1.65 million capital improvement plan during Monday night’s meeting.

Lisbon residents approved the appropriation article last week on Election Day.

“It looks like construction work will start in four weeks,” Superintendent Richard Green said.

Projects include installing LED lighting, fixing ceilings and exhaust fans, improving high-efficiency air conditioners and replacing classroom ventilators.

School Committee members also agreed to spend money through the capital improvement plan to add playground equipment to Gartley Street School to meet the needs of the program.

“Those students deserve to have playground equipment,” Green said.

Members also praised Jessica Porter, the Jobs for Maine Graduates director at Lisbon High School and Philip W. Sugg Middle School for being designated a masters specialist.

Porter works with 56 JMG students in the district, 19 of those from the middle school. Along with building job readiness skills for students, Porter also mentors new staff, delivers training and attends master specialist meetings for JMG.

“You are a champion (for the students),” committee Chairwoman Traci Austin said. “I know that you are their biggest cheerleader. I’ve seen it in action and I know that you are very involved in our schools and I applaud you for your tireless efforts.”

The next School Committee meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at the Town Office.
