CUMBERLAND — Daniel M. Young Jr., 51, passed away Friday, Nov. 10, surrounded by loving friends and family in the home of his sister in Cumberland after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 6, 1966, in Glens Falls, N.Y., to his father, Daniel M. Young Sr., and his late mother, Janice E. (Mains) Young.
The Young family moved to Maine in 1979, and Dan’s artistic abilities were already shining through in the many sketches and paintings he created throughout his youth. He expressed his talent through his lifelong career as a tattoo artist, a profession he was very passionate about. He owned two tattoo shops in Gray and touched many lives through his work. His legacy will live on through all who were tattooed by “Handsome Dan.”
Dan’s mother had a favorite saying, “deep breaths and baby steps,” which Dan often repeated and seemed to live his life by. He will be remembered by his large circle of friends as sensitive and loving, a true friend until the end, and one who would say or do absolutely anything to make you laugh … someone you just loved to spend time with.
Dan was a proud father to his sons, Dayne A. Young and Hunter W. Young, and to his daughter, Kara D. Young. He leaves behind his sister, Catherine F. Young; and his brother, David I. Young; his nephew, Kevin A. Tar; his niece, Fauna E. Spalding; and his cousin, Josh Mains, with whom he had a special bond.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to all those who surrounded Dan with love in his final journey, including Tina Zerbst, Angela Vogeler and Mark Vogeler, and a very special thank-you to Heidi Whittier and John Whittier for assuring that he was comfortable and at peace.
