FARMINGTON  — A Jay woman pleaded not guilty Monday to kicking a police officer and refusing to submit to arrest on Oct. 6 in Jay.

Carol Welch, 48, faces a felony charge of assault for kicking an officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of domestic violence assault, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest.

Jay police responded to a residence on Mossy Lane after a man reported his girlfriend had been drinking and that she had thrown a rock at him and it hit the house, Jay police said in October.

When police arrived Welch complained of back pain after she tried to get into the house, Jay Sgt. Russell Adams said previously.

Welch was visibly impaired, he said.

After Welch was medically cleared from a Farmington hospital she refused to get dressed, went into the bathroom and activated the assistance alarm, he said.

Officers Dylan Rider and Wil Herrin had to physically remove her from the hospital, and while doing so, Welch kicked hospital doors and knocked them off the track, Adams said.

Police tried to calm her down, and that’s when she kicked Rider, he said.

Once Welch was in the cruiser and on the way to jail, she soiled the backseat, he said.

Welch asked the court through her attorney Jeffrey Wilson if the pretrial curfew of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. could be eliminated.

After some discussion, Deputy District Attorney James Andrews said he had no problem with lifting that condition.

Judge Richard Mulhern eliminated the curfew.
