LIVERMORE — A couple is safe after fire destroyed their home on River Road on Wednesday morning.
Timothy Spencer had fallen asleep in his recliner and woke up to see fire in the corner of the mobile home, Fire Rescue Chief Don Castonguay said.
“It is probably what saved them,” he said.
Spencer and his companion, Crystol Hilliard, got out before flames engulfed the home, Castonguay said.
“We are not sure what started it,” he said.
It may have been a heater in the corner of the room, Castonguay said. State fire investigators were scheduled to be at the site around noon Wednesday to see if they could determine the cause.
But with the extent of the damage, he is not sure it can be determined.
The couple did not have insurance, Castonguay said. They are staying with family.
About 15 firefighters responded to the structure fire reported at about 7 a.m. Assisting Livermore were departments from Jay, Leeds, Livermore Falls and Turner, Castonguay said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the couple.
