HAMDEN, Conn. — Sophomore forward Patrick Shea scored with 24 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Maine Black Bears to a 5-3 win and a weekend sweep over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday. Cédric Lacroix added an empty netter to clinch the win.

The Black Bears scored three times in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Goals came from Emil Westerlund, Ryan Smith and Tim Doherty.

Jeremy Swayman made 45 saves in the victory for the Black Bears while Andrew Shortridge made 15 saves in the losing effort.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin 75, Bates 30

LEWISTON — No. 7 nationally ranked Bowdoin outscored the Batess women’s basketball team in each quarter, cruising to a 75-30 victory Saturday in the in-state rivals’ yearly non-conference matchup.

Abby Kelly led Bodwoin in scoring with 13 points, while Kate Kerrigan paced the Polar Bears (9-0) at both ends of the floor with six points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

Melanie Binkhorst’s eight points and eight rebounds led the Bobcats (2-6). Nina Davenport scored seven points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter, and Carly Christofi also scored seven points.

Emily Freedland had eight rebounds, while she and Binkhorst both came up with a pair of steals for Bates in the losing effort.

Central Maine CC 110, Paul Smith’s 29

AUBURN — Seven different players scored in double-figures as the Central Maine Community College notched a 110-29 blowout over Paul Smith’s College in women’s baksetball action Saturday afternoon.

Natalie Thurber led all scorers with 16 points, while recording six rebounds and five steals for the Mustangs (12-1). Jane Lester recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Eraleena Gethers-Hairston picked up 10 points and nine rebounds.

Alexis Best led the Bobcats (4-6) with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the losing effort.

Brooke Reynolds had 14 points, six rebounds and four steals for Central Maine, while freshman Jordyn Reynolds scored 13 points with seven reounds. Alex Bessey was everywhere in her 18-minutes of play, recording 12 points, seven steals and six assists.

Men’s basketball

Bates 82, Colby 79

WATERVILLE — Tom Coyne banked in back-to-back 3-point shots late in the game to lift Bates College to an 82-79 non-conference win over Colby College in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Coyne went 11-for-16 from the field, 6-of-8 from 3-point range, made both of his free throws and pulled down six rebounds, while tabulating a game-high 30 points for the Bobcats (5-2).

Matt Hanna had 16 of his team-high 23 points in the first half for the Mules (6-2). He was 9-for-15 from the field, made four 3-point shots, pulled down seven rebounds and had five assists.

With the score tied 70-70, Coyne banked in a 3-point shot from in front of the Bates bench with 3:30 to play. With time running down on the shot clock, Coyne nailed a 30-foot bank shot from the left side for a 76-70 margin.
