OXFORD — Richard Albert Whitney, 74, died suddenly at his home on Quail Ridge in Oxford on Monday, Dec. 18.

Born May 1, 1943, the oldest son of Edwin Whitney and Bertha Towne Whitney, Rick grew up in Norway, graduating from Oxford Hills High School. After graduation he was drafted into the Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. Rick returned home from that war with stories he did not want to tell, and a body exposed to Agent Orange, which would lead to many health challenges in his later life.

Richard had a wide variety of jobs during his life. He worked for many years at Sampson’s Supermarket in South Paris, Superior Concrete in Auburn, as the night clerk at the Ledgewood Motel in Norway, and at Walmart in Oxford.

Rick was a quiet but thoughtful man and a passionate follower of all of the New England sports teams. He was a true hockey fan, and there was never any other team for him except the Boston Bruins. He was also a loyal supporter of the Red Sox, the Patriots and the Celtics.

Richard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jillianne and Christopher Casperson of Berlin, Massachusetts, and two lovely grandchildren, Colin and Chloe. He leaves two brothers, Blaine Whitney Sr. of Norway, and his wife, Maria, and Michael Whitney of Tucson, Arizona, and his wife, Susan. He is also survived by a nephew, Blaine Whitney Jr. of Norway, to whom he was close, as well as numerous cousins.

Richard was predeceased by his parents.
