NORTH MONMOUTH — Archie M. Wing Jr., 89, a resident of North Monmouth, passed away peacefully at his home with his family Monday, Jan. 1.
He was born in Greene on May 9, 1928, the son of Archie M. Wing Sr. and Louise (Bean) Wing. Archie proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952. On Oct. 14, 1950, Archie married Lois Engert in Rochester, N.Y. His beloved wife passed away in 2001. Prior to moving to Maine, he was the owner and operator of Wing Movers. He and his wife were the owners of Wing’s Drive-In Restaurant on Route 202 in North Monmouth from 1969 to 1979. Following his retirement from Sears Roebuck & Co in Augusta after 25 years, he worked at the Monmouth transfer station, for the Monmouth Cemetery Association, at the Winthrop and Monmouth florist shops and as a volunteer driver for Monmouth Rescue.
Archie was very active in athletics, whether playing on teams, coaching or supporting his children and grand-children at their athletic events. He enjoyed being an ASA umpire for high school softball and American Legion baseball. He was an honorary life trustee of the Monmouth Cemetery Association and a lifetime member of the Monmouth Lions Club, and also a member of the American Legion Post #204 in Monmouth.
He is survived by three daughters: Pamela Wing and her companion, Ron Manwell, of Winthrop; Sharon Wing and her companion, Rick Webber, of Monmouth; and Amy Wing and her companion, Mike Harris, of Readfield, two sons: George Wing of Mechanic Falls and James Wing of the Philippines; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; two sisters: Frances Jenkins and Rowena and her husband, Norman Chick, of Monmouth; and two brothers: Ronald Wing and his wife, Judy, of North Monmouth and Reynold Wing and his wife, Jackie, of North Monmouth.
Archie was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Lois E. Wing; and siblings Rachel Chick and Robert Wing.
