AUBURN — Avery Lutrzykowski started off Monday’s game doing something bad, but after that it was all good for the St. Dominic Academy junior.
Shortly after finishing her time in the penalty box in the early minutes of Monday’s game against Scarborough, Lutrzykowski scored the night’s first goal. Then came four more in a 6-1 victory for the Saints in a girls’ hockey game at Norway Savings Bank Arena.
Lutrzykowski was sent to the box for interference just 32 seconds into the game. After sitting for two minutes, she stepped back onto the ice and beat Scarborough goalie Ivy DiBiase with a shot from the right boards 26 seconds later.
“At first, I was wondering why I got the penalty, but then afterwards I just wanted to get back on the ice and help my team,” Lutrzykowski said. “I was kind of mad, so I wanted to kind of overcome the madness, and what I do is when I’m mad I go out and score.”
A pair of Red Storm (3-7) penalties helped out the Saints (7-2) on their next goal. Callie Samson finished at the right post with the Saints on a two-man advantage 6:42 in. Katya Fons and Gigi Ouellette assisted on the goal.
Lutrzykowski added her second and third goals 10 and 13 minutes in, respectively, to achieve a hat trick and give the Saints a 4-0 lead after one period. Emma Theriault assisted on Lutrzykowski’s first and third goals.
“She’s quick, fast, has nice moves,” Scarborough coach Caitlin Jordan said. “We just didn’t adjust as properly as we were supposed to, as quickly.”
It was more of the same from Lutrzykowski early in the second. She found an open lane toward DiBiase on a counterattack and beat the goalie with a backhand from right to left 3:43 in for a 5-0 St. Dom’s lead.
“I just look for open ice, and when I find open ice I yell for the puck, and then after (that) it’s just picking corners and knowing where my teammates are,” Lutrzykowski said.
A penalty again played a part in a goal, but it was the Red Storm that had the advantage. Taylor Veilleux put back a rebound of a wobbly Lauren Topchik shot late in a power play midway through the second.
The Saints made a change in net after that, going from senior Payton Winslow to freshman Madyson Boulet. Head coach Paul Gosselin said it was a planned switch, wanting to get both goalies some playing time with the team in the midst of a heavy game schedule.
“Mady’s a good goalie. She does excellent, so we want to get her some more playing time,” Gosselin said. “It’s not just about now, but we’ll be getting her in more throughout the year.
“We’re very confident in our goaltending, and both goalies.”
The change in goal didn’t change the Red Storm’s luck of getting goals. Boulet stopped all three shots she faced the rest of the period.
“I think we have a scoring problem in Scarborough, and we’re going to hopefully fix it tomorrow at practice,” Jordan said. “We are struggling to put goals between the pipes right now, and so we just got to work on scoring as much as we can.”
The Red Storm came out firing on net in the third, but Boulet stayed just as hot, stopping nine more shots for a personal shutout.
Lutrzykowski rounded out the scoring at the midway point of the period with a breakaway goal.
DiBiase, a forward who converted to goalie in the past few weeks, made 11 saves. Winslow (13) and Boulet (12) stopped a combined 25 of 26 shots.
