RUMFORD — Police said a Peru man with a suspended license faces multiple charges following a car crash and foot chase in the downtown Tuesday evening.
Police Chief Stacy Carter said in a news release that Adam Gill, 23, was charged with eluding an officer, operating under the influence, refusal to submit to arrest, operating after suspension, driving to endanger, criminal mischief and several traffic violations.
Carter said Cpl. Lawrence Winson responded to a report of a vehicle being operated erratically on Route 108 about 7:46 p.m. and found a license plate next to a guardrail that had been struck. He also saw a vehicle go by that matched the description of the one being sought.
The vehicle sped away at high speed, and eventually Winson saw it go the wrong way on Congress Street and pursued it until it struck a street sign at Exchange and Congress streets, Carter wrote.
The driver, later identified as Gill, got out of the car, jumped over a guardrail and headed toward the Androscoggin River with Winson in pursuit. When the officer injured his leg, other officers and residents assisted and Gill was captured, Carter wrote.
Gill was taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris and held on $700 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in court March 12.
