LEWISTON — Sophomore Kody Greenhalgh scored a team- and season-high 17 points off the bench as Bates fell to Amherst 80-61 in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Junior Joseph Schneider posted 22 of his 24 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the second half for the Mammoths (14-7), as Amherst pulled away from a two-point deficit with under eight minutes remaining in regulation at Alumni Gym.
Freshman forward Fru Che totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for Amherst.
The Bobcats (11-12) built a lead as high as 11 points in the first half. But, the Mammoths (14-7) closed out the half with seven straight points to take a 36-35 halftime advantage.
Bates had the lead as late as with 7:26 left in the game when Jeff Spellman’s fast-break layup made it 58-56. But, Amherst responded with 14 straight points over the next five minutes.

Amherst 58, Bates 31
AMHERST, Mass. — Jackie Nagle led a balanced attack with 12 points as Amherst built an early lead and kept expanding it with a 58-31 triumph over Bates in women’s basektball action Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Melanie Binkhorst scored a game-high 13 points, hauled down three rebounds, tallied two assists and blocked three shots for the Bobcats (7-16).
Freshman Julia Middlebrook knocked down a jumper to start the game, putting Bates up 2-0. She finished with seven points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
The defending national champion Mammoths (22-0) sprinted to an 11-2 lead and finished the first quarter with a 20-9 margin.
Amherst handed the Bobcats their fifth straight loss.
CMCC 84, NHTI 67
CONCORD, N.H. — Natalie Thurber came off the bench and led Central Maine Community College with 18 points in a 84-67 victory over New Hampshire Techical Insistute in a women’s college basketball game.
Alex Bessey had 17 points for the Mustangs (22-1) while Brooke Reynolds chipped in with 13.
Melissa Martel paced the Lynx with 14 points, while Michaella Biron had 13 points and Bridget Lavin had 10 points.
