LEWISTON — A quick-moving snowstorm is expected to drop more than an inch an hour Wednesday and cause whiteouts, officials said Tuesday night.
Snow is expected to start falling by 9 a.m., with the bulk of it from noon into the evening. Snow totals are expected to be a foot or more in many areas.
“It’ll be snowing pretty hard there for a while,” National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Kimble said.
A winter storm warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
“Plan on whiteout conditions and slick roads during the evening commute,” WGME meteorologist Charlie Lopresti said.
Lewiston Public Works Director Dave Jones said that given the heavy snowfall in the afternoon, the evening commute is likely be a mess.
“Nine-plus inches in six hours will cause problems,” he said. “If people can get home and off the streets earlier, we would encourage that.”
Auburn’s parking ban is from noon Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday, while Lewiston’s is from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday.
