Perhaps Mayor Lemaire, when he gave his open letter to the Lewiston Journal yesterday afternoon, didn’t appreciate that it was not exactly the psychological time. For at night there was a rally in Republican headquarters, and some of the statements in the letter furnished first class material for the speakers. Mayor Lemaire made two important points. First he promised to reduce what he termed “the present high Republican tax rate” to 22 and one-half mill. Second, he advocated a sufficient outlay upon the fire department to permit property owners to get reduced insurance rates.

Auburn City Manager Woodbury E Brackett this afternoon lifted the shroud of mystery surrounding the bullet hole in the window of the city engineer’s office at the city building. Brackett said he was informed by Police Chief Stephen Smyc that the mishap occurred as several of the officers were in the process of unloading rifles in the backyard of the city building when a lever slipped, activating the firing mechanism. The slug went through a window in the office of City Engineer-Planner Arthur Clark, shattering part of the wooden separations between the panes of glass. The city manager said the incident was purely an accident. It took place about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday when no one was on the second floor of the building.

The second phase of the YWCA pool renovation will start today as volunteers set out to raise $610,000 to replace the corroding aluminum tank pool that’s been used for 23 years. Last year, the YWCA raised $160,000 to replace the roof and chemical system and to paint the pool. By March 31, the YWCA hopes to have found enough money in contributions to widen the pool from four to six lanes, to replace it with a concrete tank and to provide handicapped accessibility and new locker rooms, said campaign director Sandra Norton.
