Favorite: Boothbay.

The Seahawks beat everyone the played. That included handing second-seed Monmouth its only loss of the season. Faith Blethen and Page Brown are two tall scorers, and no team in the region can match up with both of them.

Dark horses: Monmouth, Old Orchard Beach

It’s tough to call the Mustangs a dark horse because their only loss was by three points at Boothbay. Oh, and they’re also the defending state champions with most of their roster returning. And Monmouth beat Boothbay in the MVC championship game, though it difficult to know how much stock to put into that game. Old Orchard Beach is a threat because they had a nice season, which included a win over Gray-New Gloucester, and they made a run in last year’s C South playoffs, reaching the final before falling to Monmouth.

Overview: Monmouth seems like the team with the best shot to defeat Boothbay, but the Mustangs have a tough road to the regional final. If they get past St. Dom’s, they’ll have to play either Richmond or Old Orchard Beach.

Prediction: Boothbay

Monmouth’s Tia Day shoots the ball against Boothbay at Monmouth High School in Jan. 2017.
