NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine, located in the Stephens Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic building, 199 Main St., has announced March activities.
A special presentation, “The Power of Prevention,” will be held at the center at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15. Maureen Higgins, Dempsey Center cancer health outreach educator, will talk about healthy behaviors that help reduce the risk of cancer.
Statistics estimate that nearly 50 percent of cancers are preventable. The interactive presentation will focus on behaviors to control and a look at simple ways to can incorporate healthy choices into lives, increase overall wellness and prevent chronic disease.
Yoga Warriors: 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28, at Posabilities, 15 Tannery St. The yoga class will support healthy living for individuals facing the challenges of cancer through gentle movement and breathing, supportive restorative yoga postures and guided mediation and relaxation. Banding Together To Restore: 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays, March 1, 8, 22 and 29 (no class March 15) at Richard Bader Physical Therapy, 176 Main St. The program, led by Lori Britting, is focused on regaining motion and strength through guided instruction, using stretching and colored Therabands. Each participant will be encouraged to work within their abilities that will safely gain their desired goals. Preregistration is encouraged. Yoga for Wellness: 8 to 9 a.m. Fridays at the center. Either Kat Larsen or Sherri will teach the class, which will include breathing, movement and relaxing meditation while seated or standing. Check the website for more information.
Self Reiki: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the center. Charlotte LaBelle of Teresia Reiki will demonstrate how Reiki helps to alleviate stress and promote relaxation.
Self Reflexology: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23, at the center. Karen Tibbetts will demonstrate how applying pressure to reflex points may help to improve circulation and reduce body stress.
Stampin’ Up: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the center. Kathy will provide all materials and instruction to make a variety of greeting cards.
Beginning Steps to Painting with Watercolors: 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the center. Suzanne Hardy will teach the beginning steps to painting with watercolors. All materials are provided. Learn about materials used and practice basic techniques. Registration is requested due to class size limit. Call 207-890-0329.
Beading Project: 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Lively Accents, 310 Main St. All materials are provided.
Programs are free to anyone impacted by cancer, survivors and caregivers. New visitors are welcome to stop by for information and to join in any of the activities. In case of inclement weather, when SAD 17 cancels classes, activities sponsored by the center are cancelled as well.
Drop-in hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday and Friday. Volunteers are available to assist with resources offered. The center provides free comfort items, such as port protectors, wigs, hats, scarves and pillows. There is a lending library and many informative pamphlets.
