This is in response to the Sun Journal article about the Lewiston canal system (Feb. 20).
On a previous occasion, I mentioned to the reporter that the canals are more than 10,000 feet long — approximately 1.9 miles — and, in 1836, a company called the Great Androscoggin Falls Mill, Dam, Locks and Canal Company was formed to exploit the potential energy at that site.
In 1845 new investors were brought in and the company name was changed to Lewiston Water Power Company.
As a retired Union Water Power Co. canal operator, dam superintendent, latter-day historian and canal tour guide, I hope that clears things up.
