RUMFORD — Selectmen have unanimously approved of Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs hiring a municipal government intern for this summer.
Briggs said the person selected, likely a college student, might work in areas such as finance and possibly help inform the public about issues surrounding the downtown construction project.
“We have to try to get young people involved in municipal government,” Selectman Peter Chase noted.
The cost will be up to $3,000, but the town might get one of three $1,500 summer municipal internship grants from the Maine Municipal Association Executive Committee.
Briggs said she will find money in the general fund for the intern.
The Executive Committee has identified the importance of municipal government internships as a way to introduce students to city and town careers, make professional connections and engage in meaningful work experiences.
Briggs said the Executive Committee will award, through a random drawing, three grants among its member municipalities that commit to hire a summer intern through the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center Maine Government Summer Internship Program.
One grant will be for a municipality of more than 7,500 residents and the other two will be for municipalities of fewer than 7,500 residient.
The drawing will be held March 29 and winners notified by April 4.
