DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a volunteer at the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine in Norway and would like to share my experience with Sun Spots readers.
I have lost family members and friends to cancer and just recently someone very close to me was diagnosed. Since I wanted to do something to help, I walked into the Cancer Center to see what was available. I was greeted by wonderful people in a beautiful and caring environment and given a wealth of information and materials to pass on to those with the disease.
The center is a warm, friendly place where patients can participate in a multitude of activities or just come in and talk. We have many professionals and crafters who donate their time. I can’t tell you what an uplifting experience it is to volunteer there for such beautiful people. We are always in need of more volunteers if anyone is interested.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am now retired and cannot afford many of the hair salons in the area for a cut and color. However, I found a woman who does hair from her home beauty salon and her prices are at least half the cost of retail salons. Since she is the owner and works from her home, should I still tip her? I always give a 20 percent tip at retail salons, but I’m not sure if it’s necessary to tip her since she works out of her home. I don’t want to appear cheap, but is tipping expected when hair stylists work from home?

ANSWER: I would really like the opinion of others here, especially home hair stylists, but this is what I would do: Just ask by saying something such as “May I offer you a tip?” I would think this is especially appropriate if you really like your hair style and feel that you are saving money. It doesn’t have to be 20 percent – it could be a token of your appreciation. Another thing I have done is to save aside the tip money and give it to the hair stylist at Christmas. I have always found that open communication with one and all works the best!
