DEAR SUN SPOTS: I keep getting unwanted mail from veterans’ groups and other organizations that contains labels, calendars and stickers. A few years ago I asked for your advice about this and was told that as long as I didn’t order anything, I don’t have to pay for it, but I don’t want these mailings at all and want them to stop.

— John, Rumford

ANSWER: There are two things you can do and I recommend you do both, although my first piece of advice is a bit tedious. Every time you receive mail you don’t want, contact the sender by phone or by letter and tell them to take you off their mailing lists. I have done this myself and have had great success. It just takes  time. You can write a form letter and photocopy it so it’s ready to pop in an envelope whenever needed.

You can also call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) or visit optoutprescreen.com. The phone number and website are operated by the major consumer reporting companies. You will get instructions on what to do to cut down on unwanted mail for good.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: To the individual who asked about “The Rifleman” and other old television series, if you go to YouTube and put the name of any show in the search engine, you can watch them on your computer. Also, if you connect a HDMI cable from your computer to the HDMI port on your TV, you can watch the shows that way. If you need assistance on how this is done, there are several videos on YouTube to help you.

ANSWER: Thank you for this good advice! I don’t know if our reader who wrote to Sun Spots on March 12 has a computer, but this is helpful for those who do.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name (we won’t use it if you ask us not to). Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be emailed to sunspots@sunjournal.com.
