AUBURN — A fire that heavily damaged a Glendale Avenue home Sunday night started near a wood stove in the basement, a fire official said Monday.

The cause of the blaze, which resulted in extensive fire, smoke and water damage, remains under investigation, Fire Chief Geoffrey Low said.

A elderly couple in the home at 57 Glendale Ave. escaped injury. One firefighter was treated for a minor hand injury at a Lewiston hospital and was later released, Low said.

A smoke detector alerted one of the occupants to the fire and that person called 911, officials said.
