FARMINGTON — A judge set bail at $2,000 cash Wednesday for a Pennsylvania man accused of accessing previously deleted, nude photos on a car buyer’s cellphone and sending them to his cellphone.
Kevin Rennie, 32, of Philadelphia remained at the Franklin County Detention Center on Wednesday night.
He was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of aggravated criminal invasion of computer privacy, according to Farmington police officer Jacob Richards.
Richards conducted an investigation after a woman called police Monday to report what she believed was an unlawful exchange of sexually explicit photographs.
Rennie had been held since Tuesday on $10,000 cash bail at the Franklin County Detention Center.
Deputy District Attorney James Andrews told Judge Nancy Carlson that Rennie has no prior criminal history in Maine or elsewhere. Andrews said he was concerned that once Rennie returns to Pennsylvania, he will not return to Maine to appear in court.
Andrews had requested that bail be set at $2,500 cash.
Defense attorney Christopher Berryment said Rennie has a wife and two children in Pennsylvania, with another child on the way. He has been married for 3½ years, according to Andrews.
Berryment also told the judge that Rennie is not a flight risk, and asked that the defendent’s bail be set at $1,000 cash.
The judge said Rennie has a family and some stability. She set his bail at $2,000, with the condition he have no contact with the woman. Carlson appointed defense attorney Peter Kaynor to represent Rennie.
The woman who filed the complaint told police she had worked with a salesman at Tinny’s Automotive Outlet in Farmington. She said she knew that salesman as “Kevin” and that he wore a “beret-style” cap. She also recalled that the salesman is from Philadelphia, according to Richards’ affidavit.
The woman told police that “Kevin” took her phone to sync the Bluetooth in the car and was gone a long time.
“When she got home and logged into her computer, which shares files and messages with her phone, she could see where Kevin had accessed previously deleted nude photos of her meant for her boyfriend and sent them to his number, which she assumed to be his as it was a Philadelphia area number,” according to the affidavit.
Richards put the number into Facebook. It came back as belonging to Kevin Rennie of Philadelphia. And in one of the photographs, Rennie is wearing a hat like he was wearing when selling cars in Maine, Richards wrote.
Richards contacted Rennie at Tinny’s Automotive. Rennie said he had sold a car to the woman.
Richards said Rennie admitted to having gone into the woman’s cellphone and sent himself the nude photos.
Rennie was arrested and his phone was confiscated as evidence.
Tinny’s had hired a marketing firm to do a promotional event. Rennie was a subcontracted sales representative for the marketing firm, Deputy Police Chief Shane Cote said Tuesday.
The dealership said it has severed ties with the marketing firm.
Rennie was issued a warning not to go onto the dealership’s property.
