Portland International Jetport is advising travelers that multiple flights have been canceled because of winter weather in cities south of New England.

The storm hammering Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City has led to the cancellation of nearly 50 flights scheduled to arrive and depart from the jetport Wednesday.

The storm – the fourth nor’easter in March – is expected to reach Maine Wednesday night. The National Weather Service predicts coastal areas will receive 2 to 4 inches of snow by Thursday.

The Associated Press reports that snow started falling Tuesday night in West Virginia and Kentucky and continued through Wednesday morning, while mid-Atlantic states were seeing a wintry mix before the precipitation was to change over to all snow.

Weather service forecasters told the AP that the storm had sharp gradients that could cause several inches to fall in some spots, while nearby areas could see much less accumulation as it moved into New England.

The flight-tracking site FlightAware reported more than 3,800 canceled flights across the U.S. on Wednesday, most in the Northeast.
