LEWISTON — The public is invited to a Good Friday service featuring the string quartet version of Haydn’s “Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross” at the historic Trinity Episcopal Church, 247 Bates St.
The performance begins at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30.
The Rev. William Barter will officiate, with the music provided by the Vaillancourt-Boardman String Quartet, featuring Jessie and Greg Boardman on violins Linda Vaillancourt on viola and Madeleine Vaillancourt on cello.
The masterwork by Haydn, who considered it among his finest, was debuted at the cathedral in Cadiz, Spain, on Good Friday in 1786. Bookended by an introduction and a finale depicting the reported earthquake, the piece is made up of seven movements based on each of the seven utterances of Jesus made while hanging on the cross.
During the service each phrase will be read in its turn, followed by the music composed by Haydn as a means of contemplation.
