DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for Maine artists and/or art appreciators willing to contribute an original piece of two-dimensional art,  or a glycee of it, no larger than 16 x 20 inches, unframed, perhaps matted, although matting is not critical. Any genre of two-dimensional words and any medium are welcomed.

The purpose is to compile a traveling portfolio of works that volunteers can bring to share with their patients who are in hospice care and their final life chapter. It is preferred that the works be accompanied with the artist’s name and hopefully a brief bio and description of how the work came to be created so volunteers can share this information with patients. The portfolio will be accessible to any volunteer.

I am with the Beacon Hospice of Augusta, and am the volunteer coordinating this effort. There are 15 active hospice volunteers in the greater Augusta/Hallowell/Waterville/Farmington/Leeds areas who have been trained through Beacon Hospice of Augusta.

Kelly Herlihy is the volunteer coordinator for Augusta Beacon Hospice (207-621-1212). She was a past intern at the Harlow Gallery when she was a student at UMA. As a volunteer, I am looking for ways to improve patients’ quality of life and enjoyment.

Many of the patients we assist are either homebound or in care facilities. Some have no visitors other than medical staff, a periodic social worker or chaplain and volunteers. Volunteers are often a critical social contributor to the individuals. While these patients are in their final life chapter, many are still cognitive and interesting people with curious minds. Many are with hospice for numerous months and they are interested in art.

I hope the portfolio will be completed by May/June so volunteers will be able to start offering this traveling art exhibit. I am willing to pick up the donations at a place convenient to the contributing artist. My contact person information for this project is 207-897-5818 or cirehlan@gmail.com. In advance, I extend grateful appreciation.

ANSWER: What a fantastic idea! Please spread the word about this project. I would love to see how it turns out.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What has happened to Cindy Williams? She hasn’t been on the NewsCenter 6 for a long time.

ANSWER: Cindy is so gracious! Whenever I have a question for her, she answers right away. By the time this answer is printed, you should be able to see her smiling face once again on Channel 6.

She said she was out sick for several days before she was about to depart for a family vacation in Italy.
