AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library has announced May activities for teens. Unless otherwise noted, programs are for teens, ages 12 to 18.
Maine Job Corps for Teens and New Adults, ages 16 to 24: For the opportunity to take part in a life-changing experience, contact Cathie Gavett of the Maine Job Corps, 207-458-5369, to find out more and who is eligible. She will arrange a mutually convenient time to meet at the library.
Tweens in the Teen Space: Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, May 2, 9 and 23, Teen Space. Sixth graders are invited to meet on half-day Wednesdays. There will be crafts or board games available, work on homework or hang out with friends.
Teen Anime Club: 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, Androscoggin Community Room. Teens can drop in to talk about manga, watch the week’s selection of anime and try their hand at drawing characters. Snacks will be provided.
Homework Help: 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, May 3, 10 and 24, second floor (check in at reference desk). Teens can get help with time management, schedule planning, goal setting and learn how to be successful with homework. The program is for teens in grades seven to 12 and will include a healthy snack.
SAPARS Drop-In Visit: 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, Teen Space. Visit with Julia, an advocate from Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services. She will discuss the issues, including consent, bullying, sexual assault and harassment, bystander intervention and internet safety. Visits may include question-and-answer session, educational videos or activities.
Gaming Hour: 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, May 9 and 30, Androscoggin Community Room. There is an XBox and Wii and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. The program will include a snack.
Teens! DIY Takeover: Create with Tape: 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, Teen Space. This month, back by popular demand, an assortment of duct and washi tape will be available for anything teens would like to decorate or create. The program will include a snack.
Teens! Discover Upward Bound: 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, Androscoggin Community Room. Teens completing ninth to 11th grade and their parents are welcome to attend the information session with representatives from Upward Bound, a program designed to help high school students learn how to learn and plan for the future. Join representatives from University of Maine Farmington to learn more about the program.
The 2018 Teen Summer Reading Program will get underway in June, meeting from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, on the front lawn of the Androscoggin Community Room.
The theme will be “Libraries Rock” and the focus will be music. The program will run from June 26 to Aug. 9. It will kick off with Chicks with Sticks Steel Drummers. Although the official Teen Summer Reading Kickoff Event, the concert will be open to all ages.
For each book read, teens will turn in a reading slip for a chance to win the weekly drawing. Drawings will be on July 5, 12, 19, 26, Aug. 2 and 9. Turn in a book review for a chance to win a book bundle, to be drawn on Aug. 9. The top reader for the summer will also be named on Aug. 9.
Each program attended also gives a chance at the weekly drawing. Programs will include karaoke singing, an Xbox Rock Band competition, gaming hours and movies.
A Pizza & Pages Summer Reading Group will read “Solo” by Kwame Alexander, “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell and “Beautiful Music for Ugly Children” by Kirstin Cronn-Mills. Participating teens will get to keep their copies of the books at the conclusion.
The Teen Summer Reading Program is for teens ages 12 to 18 entering seventh through 12th grade.
