BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Community Band will play a spring concert starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the West Parish Congregational Church in Bethel.

The band has new music for this concert, including Curtain Call by John Wasson, Alexander’s Ragtime Band by Irving Berlin (arranged by Jeff Taylor), Manhattan Beach March by John Phillip Sousa and Amparito Roca by Jaime Texidor

Kelly Bickford and Lee Smith will play the duet Sonata for Bassoon and Cello by Mozart.

A low brass ensemble featuring trombonists Justin Bondeson, Ellen Whitney, Gaelan Boyle-Wight, Kenyon King and Steve McCosh will play the first movement of Ice Cream Social called Rocky Road.

The band is playing The Symphonic Gershwin, arranged by William Barker, which includes An American in Paris, Cuban Overture and Rhapsody in Blue. The band’s ability to play this song is a tribute to the improved ability to play more complex arrangements.

Other numbers include Tijuana Brass in Concert arranged by Ted Ricketts, Evensong by William Harbinson, Glenn Miller in Concert arranged by Paul Murtha, and First Suite in E-flat for Military Band by Gustov Holst.

Donations are accepted at the door to defray the cost of music. Refreshments will be served following the concert.

The band, directed by Patricia Boyle-Wight, will play for Memorial Day and Mollyockett Day in parades. The summer concert is Aug. 13. In addition, the band will play a concert at 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Mt. Valley High School in Rumford and at 7 p.m. Monday, July 9, at St. Kieran’s Community Center for the Arts in Berlin, New Hampshire. The community band has been organized for 24 years and continues to provide music for the communities.

The band rehearses on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at the West Parish Congregational Church. New members are always welcome. Young people are especially encouraged to join for the summer. For more information, contact band president Julie Schubert-Cowan at jdschubes@gmail.com.
