CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Bates College senior Adedire Fakorede claimed his third consecutive New England discus title Friday at the New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at MIT.

Fakorede’s throw of 171 feet, 9 inches, was more than 7 feet longer than the runner-up.

Also for the Bobcats, sophomore Brendan Donohue finished second in the decathlon.

Amherst 9, Bates 0

AMHERST, Mass. — Audrey Hansen hit a grand slam as Amhest defeated Bates 9-0 in five innings in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC softball championships Friday.

The Mammoths (27-5) scored six runs in the third inning to take command. Alyson Plaman doubled home a pair to put Amherst up 2-0. Hansen’s grand slam topped off the scoring.

The Bobcats (20-14) threatened Amherst reliever Gina Pagan in the fifth. With two outs, freshman Caroline Bass singled Payton Buxton to third. But Pagan got out of the jam via a groundout, and Amherst ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single by RonnieMarie Falasco to invoke the eight-run rule.

College Tennis

Middlebury 5, Bates 0

AMHERST, Mass. — The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men’s tennis team fell to No. 1 Middlebury 5-0 Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC championships.

The Panthers took command of the match early with strong doubles play.

Bates senior Ben Rosen and sophomore Jacob Kauppila gave Kyle Schlanger and Lubomir Cuba a battle at the No. 1 position in an 8-5 defeat.

Bates senior captain Josh Leiner and junior Josh Quijamo also dropped their match by a count of 8-5. The Panthers won 8-2 in the third doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.

Middlebury won in the fourth and sixth singles to clinch the match.
