AUBURN — The Lewiston girls’ lacrosse team has had mixed results from three consecutive slow starts to games.

The Blue Devils rebounded nicely Monday to beat Edward Little 18-6 at Auburn Middle School.

“At the beginning we were kind of iffy, not really into our game yet,” Lewiston junior Christine Chasse said. “Usually, it always happens every game. At the beginning, it’s kind of rough, and once we get our heads into it, we pick ourselves up. I don’t know why we do that.”

Earlier this season the Blue Devils (3-1) overcame a slow start to beat Oxford Hills 14-6, but were doomed by a slow start in last Friday’s 8-5 loss to Cheverus.

The Red Eddies started Monday’s game aggressively, leading to a quick goal by Lydia Celani.

Chasse answered just as quickly, but Edward Little added goals by Sierra Green and Celani to take a 3-1 lead with 19:40 remaining in the first half.

After freshman Grace Dumond scored for Lewiston, Piper Norcross scored the first of her three goals to put EL up 4-2 with 15:32 left before halftime.

“We started off very strong,” Edward Little coach Jessica Somers said. “They came out really prepared to start the game … they came out ready to play.”

Dumond’s unassisted goal made it 4-3, and Chasse tied the game at 4-4 off an assist by Gabby Wilson.

Four minutes later, Chasse’s third score gave the Blue Devils a 5-4 lead with 5:59 left.

Chasse, who finished with four goals, said that a timeout pep talk by coach Brant Remington helped the Blue Devils get back on track.

“I think maybe I need to take timeout two minutes into the game,” Remington said with a laugh.

Remington said he told the Blue Devils to be less patient and more aggressive.

Chasse’s go-ahead goal was the beginning of a flurry of four goals in less than 90 seconds for Lewiston. Rachelle Ouellete, Dumond and Katie Lemieux each scored to push the Blue Devils’ lead to 8-4.

Erin Lachance added a late goal, and Ouellette scored as the buzzer sounded to make it 10-4 at halftime.

“Getting the goal right before the end of the first half was big, too, because that just put a stamp on the first half,” Remington said.

Ouellete and Dumond scored in the first five minutes of the second half to run Lewiston’s streak to 10 straight goals, making the lead 12-4.

Norcross ended the Blue Devils’ run with a free-position goal.

Lachance, Lemieux and Chasse scored to make it 15-5 and start the running clock.

Dumond scored her fifth goal of the game with 9:42 remaining.

“She’s so good,” Chasse said. “She’s just really athletic, and she’s aggressive, she’s big, she’s fast. She’s just all-around a good player.”

Shaun Leblanc and Mya Letourneau capped Lewiston’s scoring.

Chasse finished with four goals. Ouellette scored three, and Lachance and Lemieux had two.
