Nine-year-old Kaylynn Washburn, a third-grader at Carrie Ricker School in Litchfield, points her solar panel toward the sun Thursday while trying to create enough electricity to make her fan spin at Smithfield Plantation, also in Litchfield. Fifteen volunteer presenters taught five classes of third-graders a variety of outdoor-related lessons, including survival, owl pellets, every tree for itself and wind-and-solar energy during the annual Forestry Day. RSU 4 students from Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales have been going to Smithfield for Vernal Pool Day, Timber Harvest Day and Forestry Day for the past 12 years. (Daryn Slover/Sun Journal)
