Darlene Beach of Auburn and Reed Markley of Winthrop place flowers on a Ghost Bike memorial on Empire Road in Poland on Monday. The Maine Cycling Club hosted a Ride of Silence in memory of 16-year-old bicyclist Ethan Barton who was killed in 1998 when he was struck by a drunken driver. The roadside memorial was recently improved by Ethan’s parents with the addition of a raised flower bed and the white Ghost Bike, a type of memorial for bicyclists killed on the road by motorists.
