LEWISTON — The Dempsey Center announces its free June programs intended for cancer patients, their families and caregivers, unless otherwise noted. All programs are held at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St., fifth floor, unless otherwise noted.
Resting Comfortably: 9 to 10:15 a.m. Monday, June 4. Participants will explore ways to rest through gentle and restorative yoga, and positioning will be supported by pillows and bolsters. This is appropriate for cancer patients and survivors. Class size is limited to 10. Preregistration is required by calling 207-795-8250.
National Cancer Survivor Day: 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7. This event will offer light refreshments, music, interactive workshops and socializing. Cancer survivors and caregivers of all ages welcome. Preregistration requested, call 207-795-8250.
Mini Spa: 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 13. Participants will have a warm foot soak and hand treatment in a calm, peaceful atmosphere. Preregistration required, call 207-795-8250.
Create a Succulent Sanctuary: 6 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 13. This is a DIY terrarium-making workshop. All materials will be supplied. Presented by Celeste Yakawonis. Appropriate for anyone impacted by cancer, ages 16 and older. Limited to 12. Preregistration required, call 207-795-8250.
Look Good … Feel Better: 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 14. American Cancer Society program will provide free makeup and teach how to use cosmetics. For cancer patients only. Preregistration required, call 207-795-8250.
Tonics and Elixirs: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14. Participants will explore some clear liquid alternatives to water during cancer treatment. Appropriate for patients and caregivers. Limited to 15. Preregistration required, call 207-795-8250.
Space to Breathe: Monday through Friday, June 25-29, at Camp Kieve, Nobleboro. Space to Breathe is a free five-day/four-night, adventure-based therapy program for teens ages 12 to 18 who help care for or who have lost a sibling or parent to cancer. Offered at no cost to participants, Space to Breathe is facilitated by both a clinical counselor and professional wilderness guide. The program provides an opportunity for participants to challenge themselves and strengthen their confidence. Limited to 21. Preserving Basil: 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 25. Participants will make pesto and take it home for dinner. Preregistration required, call 207-795-8250.
