RUMFORD — Following two years of work, the town of Rumford received notification Wednesday that it had won a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for $990,000.
Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs said Friday the town was awarded the grant through the program’s infrastructure and community development category, which had $3 million available in 2018.
“This announcement is a long time coming,” she noted.
Briggs said the town starting working towards an application for CDBG more than a year ago. The pre-application was submitted in 2016 by the previous town manager, John Madigan, but no money was available.
In 2017, Rumford was identified and invited to participate in submitting a request for funds to apply to their downtown construction project.
“All the engineering costs that the town incurred through 2017 (for the downtown infrastructure project) can be applied to this grant,” Briggs said.
Without this grant, the funds would have been paid for through taxpayers.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve managed to get $1.68 million in grant money,” Briggs said. “That makes me really proud.”
