It is said that some local merchants are purchasing seed of Lowe’s Champion beans for $16.50 per bushel and selling the same to our farmers at 56 cents per quart. The profit is thought to be entirely too large. One Lewiston gentleman says: “Why doesn’t our food commission manage to furnish seed to the farmer at cost? It seems to me that this would be a legitimate part of their duties. This is no time for profiteering with our farmers.”

50 years ago, 1968

Thousands of Lewiston-Auburn residents turned out yesterday to view parades in the two cities and hear Memorial. Day speakers. Speakers urged a return to national responsibility and said that today’s protestors are pursuing idle causes and making a sham of the principles for which servicemen have given their lives. Speaking at GAR Cemetery in Lewiston, Atty. Nelson M. Peters said the occasion was a good time “to examine our national conscience and become fully aware of our responsibilities, not just as individuals but as a nation.

25 years ago, 1993

Musicians in the gazebo, listeners lounging on blankets and lawn chairs, the sound of music filing Kennedy Park: That’s what a Sunday evening concert series promises this summer. “A Little Summer’s Night Music” is scheduled to begin its four-week run in mid-July. The Auburn Community Band will lead off the series July 11, followed by the Maine Country Dance Orchestra on July 18; the Maine Brass Quintet Plus One, Aug. 1; and the Jazz Workshop Big Band, Aug. 8. The concerts will begin at 7 p.m. and last until about 8:30. They will be open to the public free of charge.
