PARIS — Paris Public Library’s Novel Idea Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. to watch the animated PG-13 (some violence) film, “The Breadwinner,” based on a recent book club selection. Participants can bring their evening meals and dine during the film.

The film compliments Deborah Ellis’ realistic junior fiction triology of “The Breadwinner,” “Parvana’s Journey,” and “Mud City.”  The main character,  Parvana, is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom along with much danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents to survive, as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family.

In addition to the culture of Afghanistan, the Taliban, and the lack of rights for girls and women, the trilogy itself also deals with the life or death need to immigrate.

The Novel Idea Book Club consists of adults and young adults reading, learning, and sharing their opinions in an easy and laid back environment regarding quality children’s, juveniles’ and young adults’ selections on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. A refreshment and a token gift directly related to each selection id offered each month.

New members always welcome.
