LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board of directors approved a hockey program for Spruce Mountain High School on Thursday evening.

Directors also hired four teachers and accepted three resignations, including that of Superintendent Kenneth Healey, effective June 30.

The Spruce Mountain hockey players will join others from Madison Area Memorial High School, Maranacook Community High School in Readfield and Winthrop High School, who played together last year.

Athletic Director Mark Keller said no financial support would be needed.

“We’re providing an opportunity for one or more high school students to participate,” he said.

Board Chairwoman Denise Rodzen said Keller would have to come back to the board if financial support were needed.

The board gave Rodzen authority to begin the search for an interim superintendent to replace Healey, who has been hired as superintendent in RSU 16 in Poland.

Other retirements accepted Thursday were fifth-grade teacher Susan Sandler, who is leaving after 41 years in education, and Spruce Mountain Primary School Title 1 teacher Alina Steadman.

The board approved Spruce Mountain Envirothon Team No. 1’s trip to the National Conservation Foundation North America Envirothon on July 22-29 in Pocatello, Idaho.

Team member Jordan Daigle said: “This is my third trip to the national Envirothon, my fourth year in the program. I want to thank Mr. Taylor for the time he puts into this.”

Team adviser Rob Taylor said the trip will cost $6,000. Several fundraising events are planned. For more information, contact Taylor at rtaylor@rsu73.com.

The board hired Nicole Burgess to teach high school social studies, Alisa Tibbetts to teach second grade, Kristyn Wiles to teach fourth grade and Sierra Foshay to teach in the Special Services Program.
