A Raymond fire captain has died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash Monday in Massachusetts.

Capt. David Mains, 48, was traveling on Interstate 495 in Chelsmford when the crash took place. A Facebook page for Raymond Fire & Rescue announced his death Tuesday. The post also said his wife, Jen Mains, is being treated for injuries suffered in the crash but is expected to recover.

“Captain Mains was a dedicated member who loved his family, community and this department,” the post states. “He will be sorely missed and will leave a large void in our family and organization which will not be filled without unmatched extraordinary efforts, pride, and dedication which Captain Mains put forth every day.”

Mains had been honored as a firefighter of the year, in addition to other community and department awards, the post states. Raymond Town Manager Don Willard did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash at 3:30 p.m. Monday. In a statement, police said Mains was driving a 2007 Yamaha XVS in the left northbound lane. The evidence indicates the motorcycle struck the rear of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz C450 sedan. The preliminary investigation suggests the crash happened after the sedan slowed for traffic congestion.

Mains was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital and then Tufts Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes was a 56-year-old Andover woman, and her passenger was a juvenile. Neither were injured.

Police said the crash is still under investigation, which will determine whether any charges are filed. The Facebook post from Raymond Fire & Rescue says that details about services would be shared later on.

“I want to ask each of you to keep thoughts and prayers in your hearts, reach out to David and Jen’s family and give them all a hug, support, and offer assistance as they will need these things as grieving the great loss will take a great time to heal,” it states.
